Les Doll: 1 2 3 4 5 6 7 8 Interview with Les Doll (2) | | | | | Sunil | | How did you get started online, Les? | | | | Les | | Hmmm..., I never intended on starting an online business. A friend of mine put up a personal web site on the free space provided by our mutual ISP. I though, "If he could do it, so could I!"
I am an RV technician (I repair Recreational Vehicles), so I decided to make that the theme of my web site. I had previously written some articles for a few RV magazines, which provided some basic content, and answered some technical RV related questions on the RV Newsgroups. I was not impressed by the constant bickering and the ongoing flame wars that were rampant on the newsgroups, so I invited a few people to a discussion group for more serious enthusiasts.
This discussion group expanded from a couple of posts a day, to presently over 100 posts a day. (With considerable help from my partners http://www.rvchem.net and http://www.rvsafety.com ) Our one and only rule to participate in our discussions is , "Be Nice", and this has led to some very helpful conversations for all. These discussions have also prompted some ideas for new on-site articles, led to article ideas that I have sold to some upscale RV related magazines, and have enhanced my web site to a great extent.
Early on, I also started a monthly newsletter for my new found Internet friends. While it is a constant challenge to find new topics of interest, on a monthly basis, several friends have helped out in this regard. I now have subscribers from far reaching corners of the globe and numbers totaling over 2000. While this is not "staggering" by any means, these people are loyal followers and many contribute valuable suggestions for the newsletter. http://rverscorner.com/newsltr.html | | | | | | Sunil | | So did writing E-Books follow on naturally from your site then? | | | | Les | | Well, I sort of stumbled across the idea after writing my first "Dummy's Guide". It was first a printed version but I could not publish it due to the high costs involved. The e-book format was a natural and allowed me to offer it for sale at a reasonable price, and with immediate delivery! | | | | | Next > >
