Sunil    What would you say makes a viral marketing strategy successful?
 
Michael    The problem now with using free E-Books as a viral marketing tool is that there's a glut of them. So if your free E-Book is going to work, it really has to be perceived as a high-value item. I had a message from one webmaster thanking me for 'EzyAds' and saying 'you're crazy to be giving this away'. That's the kind of free E-Book that has the potential to spread fast.
 
 
Sunil    So how do you turn the traffic that you generate from viral marketing into income?
 
Michael    I give away 'EzyAds' which acts a viral marketing tool for my other E-Book ('Ezine Writer!'). My strategy is this: people download EzyAds because they're interested in free Ezine Advertising.

So I figure they are very likely in the market for 'Ezine Writer!' which shows webmasters how to get the ultimate form of free Ezine Advertising.
 
 
Sunil    That's a great strategy Michael - using a free E-Book as a viral marketing tool to promote one that's for sale. Do you have any special techniques that you use to track how many extra sales you get from your viral marketing campaign?
 
Michael    The link in 'EzyAds' to my 'Ezine Writer!' web site is not to the index page, but to a duplicate of the index page (called 'ezyads.html'). This allows me to know exactly how many click-thru's I'm getting from the free E-Book.
 
 
Sunil    Is there anything else that you do to promote your sites?
 
Michael    I get most of my traffic and sales from the technique I explain in 'Ezine Writer!' (i.e. writing and publishing Ezine Articles). I also have an affiliate program that pays 50% commissions.
